The Tulip

Andrea Dow

It's far too prim
this pointed bud,
and yet provocative,
poised and pursing
to a lipstick slick
of deepest red.
He wants to prise
and push a finger
down the silky reaches
of its opened throat.
It makes him sick.
He'll tear the perfumed
silk to strands.
The heart: he'll wrench
it out, it's black,
he knows it is,
and knows this too:
he'll never get that
sweet dust off
his shaking hands.
